Why parents should limit their children screen time?
Introduction
More technological devices are available to children today than before. Every day, children spend six to nine hours gazing at a screen, due to smartphones, laptops, TV, and game systems availability. That's a lot of hours in front of a screen. This is a bad habit because it may impede your youngster from establishing their thoughts and playing outside. The amount of time and attention that children devote to screens is continuing to rise. According to studies, excessive screen usage causes children to become agitated and irritable. Too much screen usage might lead children to have problems with reading and social skills (Bon Secours, 2021).Thousands of working parents have been locked at home with their children for months. Many people are attempting to work remotely while their children are around, and they are anxious for some peace and quiet. Many mothers and fathers have turned to any available treatment to help them do their jobs while also combating cabin fever, including giving their children free reign over computer games, social media, and television. According to one survey of over 3,000 parents, their children's screen usage soared by 500% during the epidemic. Instead of spending so much time in front of the screen, children may be playing outside, completing chores, or reading a book. Prolonged screen time has a negative impact on children: "Too much TV might make you melancholy." Children can become depressed by watching too much television (LANG, 2020).
Why should parents limit their children’s screen time?
Parents should take care of their children and must keep a close watch on their activities while using smart devices. More time spent on screens may lead to behavioral and emotional imbalances as well as troubles at school, disturb sleeping patterns and unhealthy lifestyle.Young children who spend two hours or more every day in front of a screen are more likely to develop attention and emotional problems. Having a television in the bedroom has been connected to academic testing issues. Televisions, computer screens, and mobile device screens all emit light that disrupts your natural sleep cycle. Too much screen time near bedtime might cause insomnia in children. Time spent staring at a screen is time not spent on physical activity. Obesity becomes more likely as a result of this (Wade, 2022).Children and adolescents should limit their screen time because it leads to weight, bad eyesight, and the loss of time with family and significant events. Teens and adolescents should limit their screen usage because it leads to improper dietary choices and obesity. Screen time makes youngsters sluggish to exercise; they don't go outside or participate in sports.
Technology can quickly hook children and lead to addiction. They can't always be watched and may be exposed to improper content or materials, including inappropriate images and behaviors that could cause psychological damage for them. Parents need an understanding of what children should be watching — especially those who are active on social media sites—and how they might inadvertently affect their child's development.Video games have been proven in studies to enhance aggression, however this is usually in children who are already aggressive.Screen use can also restrict social skills and reduce interpersonal relationships. Children exercising their imaginations or playing outside is becoming increasingly unusual. Instead, a group of children engaged in their tablets is becoming increasingly prevalent. The erosion of social skills is possibly the most serious issue that people are concerned about.
Playing violent video games can lead to a lot of frustration and ill manners towards other people. When individuals start talking a lot, one person may be distracted by their phone and not pay attention to the conversation. There has been some discussion and concern about the possible detrimental physical impacts of screen usage, in addition to the psychological and social consequences. Frequent device use is thought to have negative consequences on the eyes, hands, and posture. It's also a concern that a lack of physical activity is contributing to the obesity pandemic in the United States (Wade, 2022).
Parents must try to set screen time limitations and monitor their children's internet activities. Teenagers spend a significant amount of time in front of devices. However, too much screen time can make it difficult to get enough exercise, complete homework, socialize with friends, and spend time with family. Obesity, focus and learning issues, and sleep issues are all possible side effects. Researching a school project, making music or art, or communicating with friends on social media are all examples of screen time. Watching TV shows, streaming movies, and playing games are all part of it. There's no doubt that popping in a DVD or handing over a smartphone app can be a welcome distraction for a child while his parents care for smaller siblings or take a much-needed break. While this may be true, parents should be aware that entertainment media is ubiquitous, and children are quickly bombarded if they are not properly monitored. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, children spend an average of seven hours per day on screens, which includes televisions, computers, smart phones, and tablet computers (Gavin, 2022).
Conclusion
To conclude, limiting screen time for children at this young age is critical for their health, obesity prevention, and the development of good habits as they grow older. Every parent wants their child to succeed above all else. They desire for their child to grow and learn without difficulty. We now have access to a plethora of technology that can add to a child's success. However, smart technologies such as computers, laptops, mobile phones, and other devices will obstruct learning. Excessive use of digital gadgets and time spent in front of a screen can cause a variety of problems for children, so screen time should be limited for them. Parents are encouraged to keep a close eye on their children's use of smart devices. Parents can promote their children's healthy development by encouraging them to return to such healthy and imaginative behaviors – whether they take place in front of screens or not – as limits on everyone's movements and activities change in the coming months.
